YARRA TERM 3 WEEK 8 2022
Hi everyone!
Oh what a doozy of a week we have had!
We started off on Wednesday the 31st of August where we required everyone to take part in a compulsory attendance day in preparation for our camp! We started with a small gym session to help energise the crew for the information heavy day ahead. We followed this by finalising gear, lessons on the dangers of cold exposure and the behaviour requirements of the camp members. Without attending this day the students would have been ill prepared for the camp ahead, but luckily the crew all made it to ensure their camp attendance.
Now on Thursday the 1st of september we began our journey to our ski camp at lake mountain. The crew all assembled and motivated to begin the day! These camps help to build organisational and planning skills, things they’ll use greatly during many aspects in their lives. We were extremely time efficient, keeping to schedule and collecting our gear before heading off to the slopes! On the way there the crew were all asked to create a goal for growth while on the camp. This goal was to focus on a character strength they had looked into in prior weeks and helped to give individual focus for the campers experiences. Utilising Thursday as a preparation day, we hiked up a trail, ski’s and backpacks included to practise our skiing skills. Over the next few hours we all tried adapting to walking and moving on ski’s, as well as stopping or slowing down. All the crew members took active roles in these moments, giving it a go and getting back up even when they fell to the ground 2 seconds later. It was an extremely proficient day, as some students even ventured further to try harder and more skill intensive hills. We finished this vastly successful day with a few games, pizza and even a night walk to Marysville’s own Steavenson Falls.
On the final day, Friday, we woke up nice and early to a pancake breakfast, enjoying one another's company before efficiently preparing for another day of skiing. The crew all prepped their day bags and assembled! Ready for the day ahead. Venturing the same trail as the day before we stopped to have another test run of our ski skills before deciding what was best for the group. As some stayed behind to further practice their skills and experience the snow around them, the others took off up the mountain. The second group, undeterred by the cold, were fast and attentive to their group's members. Going at a speed they all felt comfortable with and exploring the treks ahead of them. When they eventually came back down the groups reunited having a go on the hard slope in the practice area before hiking back to the bus.
These two days, though repetitive, showed great adaptability and resilience skills in all the crew members. Without these positive and persevering attitudes the crew would have struggled to achieve the amount they had. WELL DONE EVERYONE!!!
