NILLUMBIK TERM 4 2024 WEEK 4 - SURF CAMP
Hi all,
Welcome to the week 4 blog, Surf camp!
Our week started on a 33 degree day with another gym session with Brad. This week we participated in a Boxing class, going through an intense circuit and learning different boxing moves. After this we headed into the gym to continue with our program and also tested out some new equipment. Following this we drove to Men's Shed to discuss the plans for our upcoming community project where students will be building a picnic table for the Nillumbik Youth Hub in a few weeks. Students were able to meet with the guys who will be running the build and ask questions that will help them plan it! After this, we went to the local Bunnings to look at the materials they will need and figure out the sizes and type of timber.
On Thursday we drove to Breamlea which is a quiet beach around the corner from Torquay. After settling in to our accommodation and checking out the surf from the observation deck, we met Kev form TSA who issued wetsuits and boards. The crew were keen , despite the cooler temperatures and after a quick lesson on the beach, they charged into the water to take on the 2 foot waves. Within 15 minutes all the crew were able to get to their feet, stunning our instructor. This camp is all about the 4 P’s . Perseverance, positivity, patience, and participation (practice) . We spoke about the application of these strengths and if we could use all them , we were likely to succeed. Afterwards, we went and got some fish and chips in Torquay, which is a must after a session in the surf. We drove to Bells Beach, had a look at Winki Pop and drove back as the rain set in. Our dinner, was expertly prepared by Sofia and Coda, while the others prepared the salad and set the table. After many games of pool and lots of laughter, the crew hit the pillows
Day 2- Another surf session in clean offshore conditions with a 2 foot swell enticed the crew in the water and they proceeded to put on a surfing clinic. So many waves were ridden , with the very entertaining wipeouts thrown in. A great session consolidating their skills and a great effort on this camp by all the crew. Thanks to Yassie, who filled Laura’s shoes on this camp. The crew really appreciated her fun and support throughout this camp.
