Enhance Term 3 2024 Week 3

Our first day of week 3 consisted if a visit to the Aquarium! Students led a group of Collingwood English Language students through Melbourne's Sea life, helping them identify different sea animals! They had worked on resources to give to students to help them recognise animals, write a sentence about them and hopefully help their overall English skills!

On Thursday we had a very exciting day getting to see the inside of Victoria's Fire Stations Headquarters! The fire fighters at fire rescue Victoria were awesome with our students, taking them through a leadership talk and teaching them how leadership is used within first responder roles. Students were also gifted with a Fire Rescue hat! Following this we got a chance to tour the fire station, including seeing a retired fire pole, their own rec room and kitchen, meeting many different fire fighters along the way. To end the tour students had the chance to go inside the only fire bus in Victoria, used for communications for major fire rescues! Students then sat inside their main fire truck and learnt about how their water pumps work!

We then walked down to the Australian Catholic University (ACU) Melbourne campus and had a talk from one of their head lecturers in physical education and exercise science Jason! Jason gave us a tour of the campus and students participated in a game of dodgeball led by Bachelor of Education students in ACU's new rooftop basketball court, helping them gain some experience working with students! We finally headed back to CAS and had a talk from Hussain. Hussain was generous enough to tell us about his refugee story and experiences as a young person. He now works within the community and gave students an insight on how he achieved this!

On Friday we headed off to South Melbourne surf lifesaving club and learnt the fundamentals of CPR! A volunteer life saver, Matt, helped teach students using DRABCD on dummies as well as teaching them about IRB racing and the pathways to get into this! We then went down to the Hume Youth Centre and met with youth worker Cruz, Cruz took students through the programs and facilities Hume has to offer! Cruz will be working with the Hume group during their final community project!
