Eltham Term Week 2 2020

Week 2 is here and this is out first full week of the program!

We started the week at Eltham leisure centre to meet with Brad and work on our own individual workout plans that Brad created. Each of us had a goal in mind and had exercises that were tailored to meet that goal. For some this included walking lunges while others had hill sprints and mountain climbers. With all the equipment available and a beautiful sunny day we all worked hard and get through the entire program. After some cool down stretches and sanitising we drove to Eltham park lands and met with Anna from Headspace. In a shady spot Anna spoke to us about mindfulness and informed us about what Headspace have to offer. After this we did a quick character strengths survey and then called it a day.

Thursday was a big day as we were hiking and doing Trees Adventure. We picked everyone up at Collingwood station and drove straight to Sherbrooke falls picnic ground to start our hike. After slapping on some sunscreen and spotting an echidna we started our hike. Although it wasn't as challenging as out pre covid-19 1000 steps hike, the crew did well to get through the walk swiftly without any complaints or issues. After this we had lunch on the bus and drove straight to Trees Adventure to do our high ropes course. With full credit to the young people, each and every one of them gave this challenge their all. Everyone worked well to support each other and to face their fears. Some of us did this by jumping off a ledge while others worked their way up to highest course and did the longest zipline available in the park. Overall everyone achieved something today and should be proud of their efforts.

Friday was a day for learning as we participated in cpr and surf life saving at South Melbourne Surf Life Saving Club. We met with Nick, a long term friend of the program and member of the SMSLC and got started. After a brief introduction into what being a surf lifesaver offers we got stuck into CPR. The team did well to stay on task and complete the required hurdles to get a CPR recognition certificate. After this we broke for lunch and then got geared up to get into the water! Although it was cold, we each grabbed a board and practiced out signals, paddling and even participated in an emergency rescue. We thanked Nick, debriefed the day and said goodbye for the week.
