About Operation Newstart Northern

Operation Newstart Northern assists secondary students (aged 14-17 years old) who are experiencing difficulties in school, by engaging them in a unique outdoor adventure and life skill program. The program has been operating in the DET Northern region since 2001 and has seen a wide range of students from diverse backgrounds.

Each Operation Newstart program runs for eight weeks. Students attend their regular school on Monday and Tuesday during the program and attend Operation Newstart the remaining three days. Newstart runs within a different Northern Metropolitan Council area each term, allowing the students to be introduced to local programs and facilities.

The group-work based program provides a multi-layered intervention, focusing on the young person’s relationship with self, family, school and the broader community. A range of activities are used to engage the young person in a process of positive change and reaching their potential. There is a strong influence on setting realistic goals and learning from challenging situations.
